How To Make Non-Toxic Toothpaste At Home

If you’re not already aware, fluoride has been causing a lot of controversy lately. Some cities have been taking action and have stopped adding fluoride to their water, and in contrast, some that never had water before are now adding it. In some areas of the country, fluoride is even found naturally in the water. Despite all of this, we do know one thing: using toothpaste that contains fluoride is just odd. Fluoride is potentially harmful, so using a toothpaste without it is essential. Sure, you could purchase something like the Himalaya Neem and Pomegranate Toothpaste, or you could make your own that tastes even better and is much more budget-friendly!

Coconut Oil Recipe

For a toothpaste that won’t induce that nauseous feeling and tastes good, try this:

  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 3 tablespoons baking soda
  • 25 drops peppermint oil
  • 1 packet stevia
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable-based glycerin (optional)

Start by mashing the coconut oil and baking soda together with a fork until blended together. Then, add in the peppermint oil, sweetener, and glycerin, then mash more until it’s the texture of toothpaste. If you opt out of the glycerin, it will be lumpy, but will still work. Glycerin is a bit sweet, as well, so if you want yours sweeter, it may be a good idea to add it in or add in more Stevia.

How Does It Work?

After getting accustomed to using fluoride-filled paste for the majority of our lives, it’s understandable to initially wonder if something natural like this can actually clean our teeth effectively. However, the answer is a resounding “yes”. It’s minty-fresh, cleans perfectly, and leaves your mouth feeling overall refreshed, with your teeth sparkling.

Take note that coconut oil tends to become a solid in cold temperatures, and get’s more runny and thin in hot environments, so take into consideration that the consistency may or may not change as the temperature in your home does. The most efficient way to use the paste is to keep the mixture in a jar and just dip your brush in every time you need to use it. Usually bathrooms are a bit cooler so it should keep a pretty consistent temperature if you choose to store it in there.

If you are really set on using a tube, you could pipe the new paste into an old toothpaste tube or some other kind of tube by putting the mixture into a ziplock bag, cutting a hole in a corner and squeezing it through the hole.
